SAA Opposes AB 314 on Academic Excellence Scholarships

In a public hearing today before the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities, the SAA testified in opposition to Assembly Bill 314, relating to the amount of an academic excellence higher education scholarship, the number of those scholarships that may be awarded in an academic year, the eligibility criteria for those scholarships, and creating an individual income tax credit for certain academic scholarship recipients.
The SAA will keep the membership apprised of future developments on this important legislation.

GBAPS Letter on “Guns in Schools” Proposal

Check out the letter from the Green Bay Area Public Schools on LRB-1820, the proposal that would allow those with conceal-carry permits to carry on school grounds, and which would allow local school boards and administrators to determine whether or not to permit the carry of concealed weapons within their local schools.
The SAA encourages other school districts to follow suit with letters or phone calls to your legislators expressing your concerns with the proposal. For your convenience, we have provided links to the Assembly Directory, the Senate Directory and Who Are My Legislators.

WERC Confirms .12% CPI for Bargaining Agreements

The Boardman & Clark law firm recently published this School Law Update that confirms the WERC website now includes the most recent CPI calculation, .12%. That means that on a starting base wage of $35,000, the CPI increase is $42. The SAA regularly receives these updates and we believe this is valuable information for SAA members. We are distributing this update to SAA members with the permission of Boardman & Clark.

SAA Opposes SB 470 on School Crime Reporting

In a public hearing today before the Senate Education Committee, the SAA testified in opposition to Senate Bill 470, relating to reporting crimes and other incidents that occur on school property, on school transportation, and at school sanctioned events.

LFB: Estimated Tax Collections Down

The Legislative Fiscal Bureau has dropped the projected net ending balance for the 2015-17 budget to $70.2 million.
That’s $94.3 million less than the $164.5 million the agency had previously projected.
LFB cited several factors in its revised estimate, including a $158.2 million decrease in estimated tax collections and a $29.5 million drop in estimated lapses to the general fund. That was offset somewhat by an $87.1 million drop in spending and a $6.3 million increase in departmental revenues.
