Ribble Won’t Seek Re-election

U.S. Rep. Reid Ribble announced Saturday he will not seek re-election this fall.
The GOP lawmaker said he made several promises when he originally ran for Congress in 2010: to roll back federal discretionary spending to pre-bailout, pre-stimulus levels; to make Bush tax rates permanent; and to limit himself to a maximum of eight years in the House.
“My reasons are fairly simple and straightforward,” Ribble said. “I feel very fortunate to have a strong marriage, grown children, and three wonderful grandchildren. I want to dedicate more time to them. Additionally, I’ve always said elected office shouldn’t be a career. I come from the private sector and am anxious to return to it and to a more private life.”

DPI Announces Library Aid Distributions

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has announced that Common School Fund distributions for the 2015-16 school year will be $31.78 (rounded) per census student. This figure is based upon the BCPL estimate of $37.7 million being available for payment. This amount is a conservative estimate that DPI is confident will be distributed, but the actual figure is not guaranteed. Payments to districts will be made on Monday, April 25, 2016. Funds are to be used in the same fiscal year as they are received.

Wisconsin Opposes “Guns in Schools” Proposal

In the latest Marquette Law School Poll, respondents were opposed to a GOP proposal to let permit holders carry concealed weapons on school grounds. Thirty-one percent favored the proposal, while 65 percent opposed it.

Walker Still Upside Down in Poll

Governor Scott Walker continues to be upside down in the latest Marquette Law School Poll.
Thirty-eight percent of respondents approved of the job Walker is doing, while 57 percent disapproved. That’s largely unchanged from 38-58 in November.
Walker has continued to drop hints about running for a third term in 2018. But 61 percent said they don’t want to see him run, compared to 36 percent who would. That’s largely unchanged from September, the last time the question was asked in the survey.

SAA Supports AB 273

In a public hearing today before the Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety, the SAA registered its support for Assembly Bill 273 relating to making a false threat to use a firearm to injure or kill another person in a school zone and providing a penalty.
Oconomowoc Superintendent Roger Rindo and High School Principal Joseph Moylan did a great job testifying in support of the bill. Their testimony is linked below.
