Rep. Pope Introduces Student Safety Package

Rep. Sondy Pope is circulating a group of bills called the Wisconsin Student Safety Package. The package includes:
- AB-1011 Safety Revenue Adjustment (Pope, Sondy) Adjusting a school district’s revenue limit for certain school safety expenditures. Referred to Assembly Education
- SB-858 Safety Revenue Adjustment (Bewley, Janet) Adjusting a school district’s revenue limit for certain school safety expenditures. Referred to Senate Education
- LRB-5633 Memo School Mental Health Programs (Pope, Sondy) Aid for school mental health programs and making an appropriation. Deadline: Friday, March 16
- LRB-5634 Memo School Mental Health Grants (Pope, Sondy) School-based mental health services grants and making an appropriation. Deadline: Friday, March 16
- LRB-5635 Memo Mental Health Training Program (Pope, Sondy) The mental health training support program for school staff and making an appropriation. Deadline: Friday, March 16
- LRB-5637 Memo Violence Prevention Grants (Pope, Sondy) School violence prevention and reduction grants, providing an exemption from emergency rule procedures, granting rule-making authority, and making an appropriation. Deadline: Friday, March 16
- LRB-5640 Memo School Open Records Exemption (Pope, Sondy) Allowing school boards to go into closed session to address school safety plans and exempting school safety plans from open records law. Deadline: Friday, March 16
- LRB-5648 Memo School Safety Plans (Pope, Sondy) School safety plans and granting rule-making authority. Deadline: Friday, March 16
- LRB-5655 Memo School Employee Training (Pope, Sondy) Training for school district employees on emergency preparedness and school violence and making an appropriation. Deadline: Friday, March 16
According to the cosponsorship memo, “These bills come at the request of educators, families and students. They focus on supporting and expanding behavioral and mental health staff, changing school climate and culture and developing safety plans and procedures to enhance learning environment safety.”

Genrich Announces Bid for Green Bay Mayor

Dem Rep. Eric Genrich officially announced today he will not seek re-election to the Assembly ahead of running for mayor of Green Bay in 2019.
The third-term lawmaker said he made the decision after a series of “encouraging conversations” with family and community members over the past few months.
“As I begin this campaign, I want to make it clear that this race will not be about one person or a collection of candidates,” he said. “Instead this effort must be about the people of Green Bay — people in every corner of the city and from all walks of life.”
Genrich is the eighth member of the Assembly who will not return to the chamber next session. Reps. Adam Jarchow, R-Balsam Lake, Terese Berceau, D-Madison, and Jesse Kremer, R-Kewaskum, have announced they won’t seek re-election. Meanwhile, Reps. Andre Jacque, R-De Pere, and Dale Kooyenga, R-Brookfield, are leaving to run for the state Senate; Rep. Dana Wachs, D-Eau Claire, is running for guv; and Republican Keith Ripp resigned his seat in December to join the Walker administration.

Walker to Sign AB 835 Into Law

Blue Ribbon Commission Hearing Rescheduled for March 19

The Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding has rescheduled its La Crosse public hearing originally scheduled for March 5th. The rescheduled hearing will be held at 1:30pm on Monday, March 19th at the North Woods International School, N2541 Sablewood Road, La Crosse.
The Commission will hear testimony from invited speakers including representatives from the Sparta Public School District, the Onalaska School District, and CESA 4. Following the invited speakers, members of the public will be able to share their thoughts with the Commission. This public testimony will be limited to 5 minutes for each speaker. The hearing will conclude at 6:00pm.
SAA members interested in testifying during the public testimony portion of the hearing are encouraged to contact the SAA with any questions they may have or for assistance with their testimony. Stay tuned. The SAA will keep members informed of Commission developments.
