Governor’s Budget Listening Session on Education This Wednesday, December 16

Governor Evers’ budget listening session on Our Schools and Education will be held virtually beginning at 6:00pm this Wednesday, December 16.
From the Governor’s Official Website:
“Each listening session will begin with all participants in a large group meeting where they will hear from both Governor Evers and Lieutenant Governor Barnes. After the introduction, all participants will be automatically moved to small group breakout rooms where they can have a more in-depth discussion on various budget topics. The governor and lieutenant governor will cycle through the smaller group discussions to listen to the conversation throughout the evening.
Staff from the governor and lieutenant governor’s offices, as well as policy experts from our administration, will be in each breakout room to help facilitate discussion and take notes on feedback, ideas, and suggestions from Wisconsinites. In addition to the governor and lieutenant, members of the governor’s cabinet, administration members, and state legislators will likely also be in attendance.”

Nygren to Lead Wisconsin Association of Health Plans

Former JFC Co-chair John Nygren, who resigned his seat in the Legislature earlier this month, will be the next executive director of the Wisconsin Association of Health Plans.
Nygren, R-Marinette, will start the job later this month.
Nygren, who was first elected to the Assembly in 2006, has a background in the insurance industry.
“John’s demonstrated leadership abilities and experience in the insurance industry make him an obvious choice to lead the Association into the future,” said Peter Farrow, president of the association board and CEO of Group Health Cooperative of Eau Claire.
Nygren will replace Nancy Wenzel, who had originally planned to retire in early 2020, but delayed her departure to help lead the association through the COVID-19 pandemic.

WPF: State’s Budget Challenges Come Into Focus

Although the Wisconsin Department of Administration’s November 20 fiscal report provided better news regarding the state’s fiscal condition than we anticipated (or feared), today’s report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum provides a sobering assessment of the fiscal and political challenges to come in the 2021-23 state budget process. Handling Campaign-Related Emails

In response to concerns raised by SAA members, the SAA contacted the Wisconsin Ethics Commission and asked how SAA members should handle campaign-related emails sent to their work email address by candidates for public office.
In response, Ethics Commission staff shared two important pieces of advice for all officers or employees of a Wisconsin political subdivision (like a school district):
- If you would like to respond to campaign-related emails, respond via your personal email account and personal device; and
- While the Commission staff did not comment on the permissibility of campaigns sending campaign-related emails to school email addresses, staff did say it is best to avoid the use of public resources (computers and email accounts) for these types of communications altogether.
