Evers Files Paperwork to Run for Governor; Remains Non-Committal

In case you missed it, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that State Superintendent Tony Evers filed the paperwork to run for Governor on Friday, but has not yet decided whether to formally enter the race.

State Budget Holding Up Onalaska Hiring Plans

Journal Sentinel Review of Senate Budget Plan on K-12 Issues

Check out yesterday’s story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that reviews the major K-12 education provisions in the recently-released Senate GOP Budget Plan. One thing to keep in mind, even Senator Fitzgerald has acknowledged that he does not know if this plan could pass the Senate GOP Caucus at this time.

SAA Testifies Against Competitive Bidding Bill

SAA Executive Director John Forester testified in opposition of Assembly Bill 307 today at a public hearing held before the Assembly Committee on Local Government.
In addition, Waunakee Superintendent Randy Guttenberg and Julie Waner, Vice President of the Waunakee Board of Education, did a fabulous job in testifying in opposition to AB 307.
You might recall that, Assembly Bill 307 would require that a school board, before entering into a contract for the construction, repair, remodeling, or improvement of a public school building or public school facilities or for the furnishing of supplies or materials with an estimated cost greater than $75,000, must advertise or direct the school district clerk to advertise for proposals and must let the contract to the lowest responsible bidder.
The bill would also prohibit a school board from using a bidding method that gives preference based on the geographic location of the bidder or that uses criteria other than the lowest responsible bidder in awarding a contract.
The SAA will keep you informed of any developments regarding this important legislation.
