WPF: Wisconsin Education Spending, Staff Compensation Lag the Nation

The Wisconsin Policy Forum has just released a report entitled, “K-12 Trends Offer Caution as Tough Budget Choices Loom”. The WPF uses U.S. Census Bureau data to review comparative per-pupil spending trends as well as K-12 staff compensation. Suffice to say, in both per-pupil spending trends and staff compensation, Wisconsin continues to lag the nation. This is important information released to the media and the public and SAA members should review it carefully. Check it out here.

Early Literacy Symposium to Hold Fifth and Final Session Today

The Legislative Council Symposia on Early Literacy Policies will hold its fifth and final session beginning at 2pm today, Wednesday, September 2nd.
The Symposia Series on Early Literacy Policies will present information on how children learn to read, focusing on the research done by cognitive psychologists, neuroscientists, teacher preparation professionals, and early childhood developmental researchers. Today’s session will feature a Survey of Early Literacy Policy Initiatives in Other States, presented by Adrienne Fischer and Tom Keily, Policy Analysts, and Matt Weyer, Senior Policy Analyst, Education Commission of the States.

PSC Announces 2021 Broadband Expansion Grants

The Public Service Commission announced the opening of the 2021 Broadband Expansion Grant round. There is $24 million in funding available for projects to expand high-speed broadband internet to unserved and underserved areas of the state.

State Revenues Beat Original 2019-20 Projections

Despite a COVID-19 pandemic that roiled the state’s economy for the final quarter of the year, the state still took in more tax revenue in 2019-20 than originally expected when the budget was signed more than 13 months ago, according to the Legislative Fiscal Bureau.
The $17.5 billion the state collected was $211.8 million more than what LFB had estimated when Gov. Tony Evers signed the budget in July 2019. That means half of the extra revenue — about $105.9 million — will go into the state’s budget stabilization fund.
Prior to the pandemic, the LFB in January had upped its revenue projections for 2019-20 compared to its original estimates due to a bustling economy. The final tally on collections in today’s memo was down just $112.6 million from the rosier projections in January, a difference of 0.6 percent.
Today’s analysis of the 2019-20 collections was delayed as the tax filing deadline was pushed back to July 15.
A final accounting of the fiscal year, including expenditures, will be conducted in October once final spending numbers are in.
